Happy May Day!

When I was a child, there were a few years when all the kids on our street were into May baskets. It was the biggest thrill to open the door after hearing the doorbell ring and finding no one there but a little basket of flowers and a little bit of rustling in bushes. Some houses were easier to make a quick escape from than others.

I taught my students about May baskets every year when I was teaching. After showing them how to make the baskets, I acted out the fun part for them-- demonstrating how to sneak up to the unsuspecting neighbor's house, hang the basket, ring the doorbell and dash away. The whole class would be thrilled about the idea and had great discussions among themselves about who they would surprise as they made their baskets.
