Last Flowers of the Season

This first picture is one I've been meaning to post for quite some time, but better late than never!

Late summer Agastache.

I was really pleased with how this plant took off this summer and took this picture one evening as the light from the setting sun hit it.

One of my favorite gardening tasks is deadheading flowers. One day as I was trimming off the spent flowers, Katya came up and asked to hold the all the ones I was cutting. She put together quite the beautiful bouquet.

This is one of the very last bouquets I was able to pick for our dining room table. Notice how the agastache looks so much more pink in this picture.

We've had a few hard freezes now, so not much is left to the flowers. There are a few hardy ones still bravely hanging on but you can tell they are thinking about going to sleep soon. In spring I will have to look into finding some more late summer/fall blooming flowers to fill in some of my empty spots so next year I can enjoy more late season color. And when K and I go outside during the day, I'm amazed at the number of butterflies and bees still frantically trying to glean every last drop of nectar from the flowers in our flower garden (even on cloudy chilly days). The mysterious bee colony collapse that was in the news so much this summer has not been true in this little area of Idaho. Last few days these insects are working so hard that I've sometimes seen a bee and a butterfly on the same flower. I hope they all get what they need before the cold of winter sets in!

Love Katya's bouquet! She arranged it very beautifully - she must have been watching you do it. The flowers in your garden are very pretty. I always have high hopes for our garden, but I end up being too lazy to take care of it - I let nature take its course. Maybe you'll inspire me to do better next summer!
