Strawberry Season

Strawberry season started very late this year, but oh, was it wonderful. When the local strawberry patch finally opened for u-picking, we were in strawberry bliss.
Flats of fresh berries were set out on the kitchen table, and the whole kitchen was filled with that strawberry scent.
I love the deep, rich red color of berries being rinsed with cold water.
In a 24 hour period, I baked 2 loaves of strawberry bread, made a batch of freezer jam, a pie, and a double batch of strawberry-lemon muffins.
Something to make your insides happy: a shake made with honey-plain yogurt, strawberries, milk and sugar.
Strawberries go wonderfully with other tastes. Sliced strawberries and watermelon: two very different kinds of sweet. Homemade strawberry shortcake is always a treat, but fresh raspberries mixed in with the strawberries add a little extra depth.
And of course, strawberries sprinkled on a bowl of cereal always make the day start out right.
